A UNIQUE GOD
" In the beginning God
created the heaven and the earth " (Genesis 1:1).
It’s most likely the best known verse of the bible. But few
are those who take the time to stop and meditate on it. Those who would do
so would be stunned to discover the richness it abounds in.
One of the meaning which is revealed in this verse and that
we’re going to examine, is the uniqueness of God. The oneness of the Creator
is a strong Bible message which reminds us that we have been created by Him
and He is the one who saves us :
"
God created man in His own image, in the image of God created
He him ; male and female created He them "
(Genesis 1:27). " ...there is no God else besides Me, a just God and a
Savior. There is none besides Me " (Isaiah
45:21).
God alone created the heavens and the earth, God alone
created men in His own image and God alone can guarantee salvation for
humanity. Even the falling angels acknowledge the existence of one and only
God. Let’s rather read : " Thou
believest that there is one God ; thou doest well. The devils also believe,
and tremble "
(James 2:19).
In Hebrew, the first verse of Genesis 1:1 reads as follow : " Braisheet bara Elohim...
".
The first three Hebrew words fit with the first four words of
the French Bible : " Au commencement Dieu créa ".
The Hebrew
version shows a double feature. First, with the word
Elohim
which is translated by the word
" God ",
then with the word bara, translated by the word "
create ".
Elohim
is a plural
word as the word create is singular. There is no grammatical mistake
at all, neither an eventual plurality of persons in the Godhead. We must
simply understand that the word Elohim designate what grammar scholars would
call : “ the plural of the majesty, the fullness of the divine power, all of
the manifested powers of God ” (Biblical Dictionary of SMITH).
Consequently,
these show God’s infinite nature : Omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient.
On the other
hand, Genesis 1:1 does not question the existence of God, nor its origin. On
the contrary, Genesis 1:1 states that God is. Besides, as it starts by : "
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth ",
the Bible
states that God is, from the very beginning.
In other words,
the fact that God is from the beginning does not mean that He started
to exist from that particular time. His omnipotent nature makes Him exist
even before the beginning of time.
