THE LORD'S RETURN
...I
go to prepare a
place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there ye may be also " (John 14:2c-3).
What a wonderful promise from the King of glory ! By the way,
which event is Christ referring to ?
In order to know that, it is advisable to replace the
Messiah’s remarks in the right perspective, as much in a time span than in
space.
First of all, in a time span. Christ is with His disciples,
just before Easter. It’s the opportunity for Him to talk with them, as He
always did during His ministry. Knowing that His time is near [Gethsemane,
insults, scourging, the bitter cup of the crucifixion], He assures His
disciples once more of His love for them and foretells a number of things
that must come to pass which they presently can’t grasp (read carefully John
14:1-29).
Then, in space. The Messiah is in Jerusalem, somewhere in the
holy city, far from people’s eyes and excitement which precede Easter. It’s
in this particular context He talks to the twelfth and tells them :
" I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there ye may
be also ".
Is it to say that Jesus was referring to the cross and the
grave ? That’s impossible ! Asserting that He will prepare a place for us
where He is, there we may be also, Christ could not mean His awaiting death.
The event He was referring to is simply His return.
